Any confident statement that one fibre is more sustainable than another is either omitting the methodology or has not examined it. The comparisons are genuinely unsettled, and the reasons are worth understanding.
Why comparison is hard
Life cycle assessment attempts to quantify impacts across production, use and disposal.
The difficulty is that there are many impact categories — greenhouse gases, water use, land use, chemical pollution, biodiversity, waste — and materials rank differently in each.
Combining them into a single score requires weighting, and the weighting is a value judgement rather than a measurement.
A methodology weighting greenhouse gases heavily produces one ranking. One weighting water use or chemical pollution produces another.
Which means the answer depends on a choice made before any data is examined, and different frameworks in use produce genuinely different results.
The specific disputes
Where the disagreements are sharpest.
Animal fibres carry substantial emissions from livestock, particularly methane, which weighs heavily in carbon-focused frameworks.
They are also durable, biodegradable, and produced from land that frequently cannot support other agriculture, which weighs in frameworks considering land use and end of life.
Synthetic fibres carry lower production emissions per unit in some analyses, and contribute to microfibre pollution and persist indefinitely.
Conventional cotton uses substantial water and, in some regions, significant pesticide, while being biodegradable and produced without livestock.
Each of those is a real consideration and no framework accommodates all of them without a weighting decision.
The durability variable
Which changes conclusions more than the material and is frequently excluded.
Impact per wear depends on how many wears a garment delivers.
A durable garment worn two hundred times has a fraction of the per-wear impact of an identical one worn twenty times.
Many assessments compare materials per kilogram rather than per wear, which ignores this entirely and systematically favours materials used in disposable garments.
Incorporating durability is difficult, since it depends on construction and care rather than on fibre alone, and it is where the largest differences actually sit.
The welfare dimension
Which is not an environmental question and belongs in the assessment.
Animal fibres raise welfare considerations that vary enormously by production system and by region.
Certification schemes exist addressing specific practices, and their coverage and rigour differ.
This is a separate axis from environmental impact and people reasonably weight it differently, which is another reason a single sustainability ranking cannot be constructed.
The data problem
Underneath all of it.
Much of the data used in these assessments comes from industry bodies with an interest in the outcome, on both sides.
Regional variation is enormous and averages conceal it. The same fibre produced in different places under different systems has very different impacts.
And supply chains are opaque enough that tracing a specific garment to a specific production system is frequently impossible.
Which means even a well-constructed methodology is applied to data of uncertain quality.
What can actually be said
The conclusions that survive across frameworks.
Producing fewer garments reduces impact more reliably than any material substitution.
Extending the life of existing garments reduces impact per wear regardless of material.
Second-hand purchase avoids production entirely.
And washing behaviour is a meaningful share of lifetime impact for most garments and is entirely within the owner's control.
These hold under every weighting I have seen, which is what makes them worth acting on when the material question does not resolve.
How to read a brand's claim
Ask which framework was used and which impacts it weights.
Ask whether the comparison is per kilogram or per wear.
Note whether the claim is about a material or about a specific supply chain, since a fibre can be produced well or badly.
And treat any single-score sustainability rating as a summary of somebody's weighting decisions rather than as a measurement, which is what it is.
The alternatives marketed as solutions
Worth examining since they are presented as resolving the debate.
Materials described as vegan leather are frequently plastic-based, which carries the synthetic issues discussed elsewhere including durability and end of life.
Plant-based alternatives using agricultural residues are genuinely interesting, and most currently incorporate synthetic binders or backings, which limits the biodegradability claim.
Durability is the significant variable. A synthetic alternative lasting two years against a leather item lasting twenty changes the per-wear comparison entirely.
The category is developing quickly and the honest position is that it is unsettled rather than solved.
Certification, and what each scheme covers
Worth understanding since the labels are numerous and the coverage differs.
Some schemes address animal welfare specifically. Others address land management. Others address chemical use in processing, or worker conditions, or recycled content.
None covers everything, and a garment carrying one certification is making a claim about that dimension only.
Which is reasonable and is frequently presented as a general endorsement, and reading which scheme is being cited takes a moment and narrows the claim considerably.
