Almost every curbside program in the United States excludes clothing, and the reason is mechanical rather than philosophical. Textiles break the machinery that sorts everything else.
Sorting lines are built for rigid objects
A modern recovery facility separates materials using screens, air jets, magnets and optical sensors. Every one of those methods assumes items that hold their shape.
Fabric does not. It drapes, wraps and flattens, so it behaves unpredictably at each separation stage.
The design target was containers and paper, which arrive in a limited range of forms. Nothing in the equipment anticipates a garment.
Textiles wrap around rotating equipment
Disc screens use spinning shafts to bounce flat items upward and let containers fall through. A shirt sleeve catches on a shaft and winds tight around it.
Once wound, it collects more material and eventually stops the shaft. Clearing it requires shutting the line down and cutting the mass off by hand.
Facility operators describe this as one of their most frequent unplanned stoppages. The cost is measured in downtime rather than in disposal fees.
Contamination travels with the textile
Clothing arriving in a mixed stream is wet, soiled and mingled with food residue by the time it reaches the plant. That condition rules out most recovery routes.
Even clean textiles are a problem for the paper bale, since fibers that are not wood pulp reduce the value of the load. Buyers reject contaminated bales.
The economics therefore push in the same direction as the mechanics. There is no revenue on the other side to justify the disruption.
Fiber blends have no easy separation route
A cotton-polyester shirt is two chemically distinct materials distributed through the same yarn structure. Separating them requires chemical processing rather than mechanical sorting.
Facilities exist that attempt this, but they are few, capital-intensive and dependent on a clean, sorted, known input. Curbside collection supplies the opposite.
Elastane in stretch garments complicates the chemistry further. Small proportions of it disqualify otherwise recoverable material.
What the separate channels actually do
Donation bins, thrift organizations and take-back programs exist because they collect textiles dry, unmixed and sortable by hand. That sorting step is what curbside cannot provide.
Even in that channel, only part of the volume is resold locally. The remainder moves into export markets, industrial wiping cloth and shoddy fiber for insulation and padding.
Keeping clothing out of the recycling cart is therefore not a technicality. Putting it in destroys value in the rest of the load and stops the line.
