Compression garments have moved from clinical use into ordinary sportswear and then into everyday clothing. The sensation they produce is immediate and consistent, which is most of the reason they sell.
Graduated pressure has a defined meaning
Medical compression is specified in pressure at the ankle, decreasing up the limb. The gradient is the point, and garments are sized to produce a stated pressure on a given leg.
Sports and lifestyle compression borrows the look without the specification. Most garments state no pressure figure, so the actual force applied varies with the wearer's dimensions.
Which means two people in the same size can be experiencing quite different garments, and neither has any way of knowing where they sit.
The immediate sensation is proprioceptive
Firm, even pressure across a limb increases the signal from skin and joint receptors, which sharpens the wearer's sense of where the limb is and how it is moving.
That feedback registers as steadiness and control. It arrives within seconds of putting the garment on, long before any circulatory effect could plausibly develop.
The feeling is real and useful, but it is a sensory effect rather than evidence that anything mechanical has changed in the muscle underneath.
Vibration damping is the clearest physical effect
Muscle tissue oscillates on impact. A tight garment reduces the amplitude of that oscillation, which is straightforward mechanics and easy to demonstrate.
Reduced oscillation is the mechanism most often proposed for the reduced soreness some wearers report after long efforts on hard surfaces.
How much this matters over a full session is where the picture gets murky, and results across studies have been mixed enough that no confident claim is warranted.
Blinding is nearly impossible to arrange
A wearer always knows whether they are wearing a compression garment. There is no convincing placebo version, so expectation cannot be separated from effect in most trial designs.
Perceived exertion and perceived recovery are exactly the outcomes most vulnerable to expectation, and they are also the outcomes most often reported as improved.
This is not a reason to dismiss the garments. It is a reason to treat performance claims more cautiously than claims about how the garment feels.
Fashion inherited the aesthetic
Once compression left the clinic it became a look. Sculpted seam lines, dense knits and body-mapped panels signal technical capability whether or not the garment applies meaningful pressure.
Shapewear and compression sportswear now overlap in construction, and the same knitting techniques serve both a medical and a purely visual purpose.
The result is a category where the label describes a fabric behaviour, and where anyone with a clinical need should be looking for a stated pressure rather than a marketing term.
