Cotton grown in the United States comes disproportionately from regions that do not receive enough rainfall to support it. The gap is closed with pumped water, and that arrangement has limits.
The crop moved toward dry country
Cotton production shifted westward over the last century, away from the humid Southeast toward the southern Plains and the desert Southwest. Pest pressure, mechanization and land economics all pushed in that direction.
Drier air suits the crop in important ways, reducing disease and allowing mechanical harvesting of clean fiber. What those regions lack is rainfall during the growing season.
Irrigation resolved the contradiction. The agronomic advantages of dry country became available wherever water could be delivered.
Much of that water comes from underground
Large portions of the growing area draw on aquifers rather than on rivers or reservoirs. Groundwater is reliable in a way surface allocation is not, since it does not vary with a single season's snowpack.
Recharge rates for those aquifers are slow relative to extraction. Water withdrawn over decades is not replaced on a decade timescale.
Falling water tables raise pumping costs steadily, since energy is required to lift water further. The constraint arrives as expense before it arrives as absence.
Fiber quality is tied to water timing
Cotton fiber length and strength are set during a specific window of boll development. Water stress in that window shortens fiber, and short fiber spins into weaker, more variable yarn.
Irrigated fields can hit the window precisely, which is why irrigated cotton carries a quality reputation. Rain-fed fields depend on weather cooperating with the calendar.
Mills buy on measured fiber properties rather than on origin sentiment. The quality premium is what makes the water expenditure economically rational.
Dryland production is a real but different crop
Substantial acreage in the same regions is farmed without irrigation, accepting lower and far more variable yields. In poor years, a share of that acreage is abandoned before harvest.
Dryland fiber tends to be shorter and is directed toward coarser end uses. It is not a substitute for irrigated fiber in fine yarns.
The two coexist within the same counties, and the ratio between them shifts with water cost and commodity price. That ratio is a useful indicator of stress in the system.
What this means for a garment label
A shirt marked as American cotton carries an unstated water history that varies enormously by field. Country of origin says nothing about irrigation method or aquifer condition.
Certification schemes that address water use exist, but they measure practices at farm level rather than at national level. That granularity is what a meaningful claim requires.
Buyers looking for a genuine signal should look for the farm-level scheme rather than the flag. Origin alone is not an environmental statement.
