Breathable is one of the least precise words in clothing. It covers at least three distinct fabric behaviours, and a garment can be excellent at one while being poor at the others.

Vapour transfer is the technical meaning

In technical outerwear, breathability means the rate at which water vapour passes through a membrane from the warm humid side to the cooler outer side.

It is measured in a laboratory under fixed temperature and humidity, and the resulting figure describes the membrane rather than the finished jacket.

Which is why a jacket can carry a high rating and still feel clammy, since seam tape, lining, face fabric and a wet outer surface all reduce what the membrane can achieve.

Air permeability is a separate property

A loosely woven linen shirt lets air pass straight through it. That is air permeability, and it cools by moving air across the skin rather than by transporting vapour.

A waterproof membrane has no air permeability at all by design. It can be breathable in the vapour sense while being completely airtight.

Everyday language collapses the two, which is how a shopper ends up comparing a shell jacket and a cotton shirt using a single word that means different things in each case.

Wicking is about liquid, not vapour

Wicking fabrics pull liquid sweat along fibres and spread it over a wide surface so it evaporates faster. Nothing passes through the fabric in the process.

The sensation of dryness comes from moving liquid off the skin, which is why a wicking base layer feels comfortable even when it is holding a lot of water.

A garment can wick well and block vapour, or transfer vapour well and feel wet against the skin. The two properties are engineered separately.

Fit changes the result more than the fabric

Vapour has to move from skin to fabric before any of the fabric's properties matter. A loose garment traps a layer of humid air that slows the whole process.

Ventilation openings under the arm or at the back often do more for comfort than an upgrade in membrane specification, because they replace humid air wholesale.

Layering compounds this. Each additional interface adds resistance, so a highly breathable shell over a plastic-feeling mid layer performs at the level of the weakest layer.

Why the marketing word survives

Breathable tests well with shoppers because it describes a feeling rather than a specification, and feelings are what people are actually buying.

There is no single standard that must appear on a label, so the term can be applied to a membrane, a mesh panel or an ordinary cotton weave.

Reading the construction is more informative than reading the claim. Weave openness, membrane type and the presence of real vents say more than the adjective on the swing tag.
