Cosmetic ingredient lists are standardised, legally required and effectively unreadable to most buyers. Learning to read them takes about an hour and settles a substantial proportion of marketing claims.

This is about reading labels rather than about anybody's skin. Anything involving a specific condition belongs with a qualified professional.

The ordering rule

The most useful single fact.

Ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration, down to one percent. Below one percent, they may be listed in any order.

Which means the first several ingredients constitute most of the product, and anything near the end is present in a small amount.

The practical consequence is immediate. A product marketed on a particular active ingredient which appears near the end of the list contains very little of it.

Preservatives and fragrance are generally used at low concentrations and appear late legitimately, so their position tells you little. An advertised active appearing after them is informative.

The one percent line

A useful trick for locating it.

Certain ingredients are almost always used below one percent — common preservatives, and the compounds used to adjust acidity.

Anything appearing after those is present at under one percent, whatever the marketing says.

This is a well-known technique among people who work with formulations and it is not difficult to apply once you know which ingredients to look for.

What the list cannot tell you

Important limits, because the technique gets over-applied.

Concentration is not stated except through ordering, so you cannot determine whether an active is present at an effective level or merely present.

Formulation matters enormously and is invisible. The same ingredients at the same concentrations, formulated differently, perform differently.

Stability is invisible. Some ingredients degrade with light and air, and packaging determines whether they survive.

And efficacy is not the same as presence. An ingredient with good evidence behind it at a particular concentration does nothing at a fraction of that.

The claims the list does settle

Several common ones.

Whether an advertised hero ingredient is meaningfully present, from its position.

Whether a product described as fragrance-free contains fragrance, which it sometimes does under names that are not obviously fragrance.

Whether an expensive product differs substantially from a cheap one, which is frequently answerable by comparing lists and which frequently shows they are similar.

And whether a natural claim corresponds to the composition, which it often does not.

The natural framing

Worth addressing since it drives a great deal of purchasing.

There is no regulated definition of natural in cosmetics in most jurisdictions, so the word carries no defined meaning.

Naturally derived ingredients are frequently processed extensively, and the distinction between derived and synthetic is not a distinction about safety.

Plant extracts include some of the more common sensitisers, and essential oils are a frequent cause of contact reactions.

The safety question is about the specific substance at the specific concentration, which is what regulatory assessment addresses, and origin is not the relevant variable.

Where the regulation actually sits

Worth knowing because it varies.

Different jurisdictions maintain different lists of prohibited and restricted substances, with the stricter regimes prohibiting a considerably larger number.

Which means the same brand may sell different formulations in different markets, and comparing the ingredient lists between them is occasionally revealing.

Allergen labelling requirements also differ, with some regimes requiring specific fragrance allergens to be named individually rather than hidden within a general fragrance entry.

The practical routine

What I actually do now.

Check where the advertised active sits relative to the preservatives.

Check whether fragrance is present, which is the most common cause of reactions and is easy to identify.

Compare the list against a cheaper product in the same category, which frequently ends the decision.

And check the packaging, since anything light-sensitive in a clear jar has a problem regardless of what the list says.

Four checks, about a minute, and they have saved me a considerable amount on products that turned out to be a well-marketed version of something I already had.

Patch testing

A practical step worth mentioning since ingredient reading does not predict individual reactions.

Applying a small amount to a discreet area for several days before using a product properly identifies a proportion of reactions before they affect your face.

It does not catch everything, since some reactions develop with repeated exposure over longer periods.

Introducing one product at a time is the related discipline, and for the same reason as with a routine — several changes at once tell you nothing about which caused a problem.

Where the same list means different things

A limitation worth understanding before over-relying on comparison.

Two products with near-identical lists can differ substantially in feel, stability and effect, because of the order of manufacture, the temperature at which things were combined, and the particle size of certain ingredients.

None of that is disclosed anywhere.

Which means list comparison is a good tool for detecting marketing claims that do not hold and a poor tool for concluding two products are equivalent.
