Clothing generally fails from laundering rather than from wear. Colour loss, shrinkage, pilling, elastic degradation and fabric thinning are largely washing outcomes.
Which means laundry is where the useful life of a wardrobe is actually determined, and most of the adjustments are free.
Washing less often
The single largest factor and the one people resist.
Many garments are washed after every wear as a default rather than because they need it.
Outer layers, knitwear, jeans and structured garments generally do not require washing after a single wear unless visibly soiled or in contact with skin.
Airing between wears addresses odour for most fabrics, and spot cleaning addresses marks without subjecting the whole garment to a cycle.
Reducing wash frequency extends life more than any other change, and it reduces water, energy and microfibre release simultaneously.
Temperature
Lower is better for the garment and for everything else.
Modern detergents are formulated to work at low temperatures, and for ordinary soiling a cool wash is effective.
Heat causes shrinkage in natural fibres, accelerates colour loss, and degrades elastane.
The exceptions are genuine — items requiring hygienic washing, heavily soiled work clothing, and periodic hot washes to maintain the machine itself, which otherwise develops residue and odour.
Mechanical action is the hidden damage
The factor nobody thinks about.
Pilling, thinning and abrasion come from friction during the wash, not from detergent.
Overloading increases friction, since garments cannot move freely and rub against each other under pressure.
Shorter cycles reduce it. Many machines have a rapid programme that is entirely adequate for lightly soiled loads and does considerably less damage.
Turning garments inside out protects the visible surface, which is where pilling matters.
And mesh bags for delicate items reduce abrasion substantially for very little effort.
Drying is worse than washing
The stage that does the most damage per use.
Tumble drying combines heat and mechanical action, and the lint collected is fabric that has been removed from the garments.
That accumulation is the visible evidence of the damage, and it is substantial over a garment's life.
Air drying eliminates it entirely and costs nothing but space and time.
Where a dryer is necessary, a lower heat setting and removing items while slightly damp reduces the damage considerably.
Detergent quantity
Where most households are wrong in the same direction.
Using more than required does not clean better and leaves residue in fabric, which causes stiffness, traps odour and irritates skin.
Dosing is specified for water hardness and load size, and most people use considerably more than the instruction.
Fabric softener is worth mentioning separately. It coats fibres, which reduces absorbency — a genuine problem for towels — and it can affect the performance of technical fabrics substantially.
The specific fabrics
Where the rules differ.
Wool requires cool water and minimal agitation, since heat and friction cause felting, which is irreversible.
Elastane degrades with heat, which is why stretch garments lose their recovery.
Technical waterproof fabrics require specific detergents and periodic reproofing, and ordinary detergent degrades their performance.
And down requires thorough drying with agitation to restore loft, which is one of the few cases where a dryer is genuinely necessary.
Stains, briefly
The principle that covers most of it.
Treat promptly, since dried stains are considerably harder.
Cold water for protein stains, since heat sets them.
And never put a stained garment in a dryer, since heat will fix anything remaining permanently and remove the chance of a second attempt.

Wash less, cooler, on shorter cycles, with less detergent, in fuller but not overloaded machines, and air dry.
Every one of those extends garment life, and every one reduces cost and environmental impact at the same time, which is an unusually clean alignment.
The machine itself
Worth a note since it affects every wash.
Low-temperature washing with liquid detergent allows residue and biofilm to accumulate in the machine, which produces odour that transfers to clothing.
A periodic hot wash with an appropriate cleaner addresses it, as does leaving the door open between uses so the drum dries.
Cleaning the detergent drawer and the filter, which most people have never opened, resolves a surprising proportion of complaints about clothes not smelling clean.
None of that requires a product beyond what is already in the house.
Reading the care label
Since it is the instruction that comes with every garment and is largely ignored.
The symbols are standardised and cover washing temperature, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional cleaning.
Learning them takes about ten minutes once and applies to everything thereafter.
Worth knowing that the label states the safest treatment rather than the only possible one — manufacturers are conservative, and many garments labelled for professional cleaning can be hand washed successfully, with the risk sitting with you rather than with them.
Water hardness
A variable that affects everything above and differs enormously by area.
Hard water reduces detergent effectiveness, which is why dosing instructions specify it, and leaves mineral deposits in fabric that make towels stiff and colours look dull.
Using the correct dose for your area is the first remedy, and it is frequently more than soft-water households need rather than less.
Water softeners and periodic descaling of the machine address the accumulation, which otherwise reduces heating efficiency over years.
